He underwent his initial education in Sukabumi and Johor Bahru. Later, he pursued studies at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, England, and furthered his education at the University of Malaya in Singapore, McGill University in Canada, and the University of London in England.
Royal Professor Dr. Syed Naquib received his M.A and PhD from McGill University and the University of London, respectively, with a special focus on Islamic philosophy, theology and metaphysics.
To-date, his doctoral thesis on “The Mysticism of Hamzah Fansuri” remains the most important and comprehensive works on one of the greatest and perhaps most controversial Sufi scholars in the Malay world.
Upon returning to Malaysia, he became the Head of the Division of Literature in the Department of Malay Studies at the University of Malaya in 1965, and served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts between 1968-1970.
