One Doctor’s Passionate Pursuit in Redefining Bladder Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy

Dr Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam currently holds the position of Director of Research & Innovation at Perdana University, an emerging Malaysian private institution that specialises in health science and data science programme across foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels. His contributions to cancer genetics research have been featured in several high-impact, peer-reviewed publications.

As a 2013 Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment Recipient, Dr Abhi plans to strengthen his research on the identification of molecular markers for the diagnosis, prognosis and therapy of bladder cancer through greater molecular understanding of the disease.

A true multifaceted leader

Dr Abhimanyu has also worked as a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Universiti Putra Malaysia since October 2020, and is an Honorary Consultant Geneticist at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. He holds the esteemed position of Dean of the School of Healthcare and Medical Sciences at Sunway University in Kuala Lumpur, where he is also a Professor & Head of the Department of Biological Sciences and serves as the Chairperson of the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA).

With an ardent passion for making significant contributions to the field of science, Dr Abhimanyu research is credited with identifying molecular markers for the diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of bladder cancer, enhancing our molecular understanding of the disease.

Driving scientific advancement

In acknowledgment of his accomplishments, he has received numerous awards and has been appointed to various national and international policy and strategic committees. He serves as the Chair of the International Network for Government Science Advice Asia Steering Committee, leads the Malaysian Science Outlook RDCI Committee.

Furthermore, Dr Abhi holds the position of Chair for the Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) and was honored as the Best Science Communicator at the 2016 International Famelab Finals in the UK.
