More Than a Gut Feeling: Chua Ling Ling’s Quest for Understanding Gut Microbiota

While pursuing a PhD in Health Sciences at University of Malaya, Chua Ling Ling is working on the Malaysia-Singapore (MaSpore) Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) clinical trial.

Also carrying out research related to primary immunodeficiency in children, collaborating with Professor Dr. Hany Ariffin at the University Malaya Medical Centre.

Unraveling Microbial Shifts

Chua's doctoral research entitled “Association between gut microbiome dysbiosis (changes in gut microbiome) with systemic immune activation, inflammation and early onset of age-related diseases in HIV infected individuals”, delves into examining changes in gut microbiota composition in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and in long-term survivors.

Her goal is to better comprehend the impact of cancer treatment on altering the body's bacteria and how these changes may affect the health and well-being of patients.

Learning across borders

As part of her academic journey, Chua pursued an attachment at New York University (NYU) Medical Center to investigate the association between gut microbiota dysbiosis, systemic immune activation, inflammation, and the early onset of age-related diseases.

As the microbiota research is a relatively new field in Malaysia, Chua hopes her collaboration with NYU will lead to acquiring knowledge and technical skills for microbiota profiling and data analysis, thereby enhancing the understanding of the relationship between gut microbes and the immune system.
