A Mission to Solve Bone Trauma Injuries and Transform Lives

Dr Yanny Marliana Baba Ismail is a registered Graduate Engineer and senior lecturer at School of Materials & Mineral Resources Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

She completed her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the Keele University, United Kingdom (UK) in 2016. Dr. Yanny obtained her degree in Materials Engineering from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and completed her Master of Science in Bioceramics a year and a half later at the same university.

How an early childhood observation sparked her life’s mission

From an early age, Dr Yanny, who grew up with parents in the medical field, observed the plight of patients whose mobility was severely diminished due to accidents. Her ambition is to one day find a solution to fix injuries caused by bone trauma, to help patients suffering from serious bone injuries to recover and improve their quality of life

This has motivated her to develop advanced materials for medical applications. She has published her research works at various prestigious journals and presented worldwide at scientific conferences in the UK, Europe, US and South-east Asia.

In 2018, she represented Malaysia for the International Scientific Debates for Global Week organised for young academics in Nottingham Trent University, UK. Besides being actively involved in research, she is also highly passionate in online Teaching & Learning (T&L) where she has been appointed as one of USM’s Trainers for T&L programme under Centre for Development of Academic Excellence (CDAE).

Dr. Yanny's Biomaterials Journey in Europe

During a three-month academic attachment in the UK, Dr. Yanny collaborated with Dr. Yvonne Reinwald at Nottingham Trent University and visited renowned biomedical institutions across Europe which focused on biomaterials and tissue engineering research, this includes the Tissue Engineering Research Group Laboratories at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham, the Institute of Translational Medicine at Technische Universitat Berlin, the University of Birmingham's Guy Hilton Research Centre, and the Francis Crick Institute in London.

The experience allowed Dr. Yanny to meet experts, present her work, and explore new technologies, sparking ideas for advancing biomaterials beyond conventional methods. Her attachment journey inspired possibilities for experimenting with 3D bioprinting techniques to enhance cell attachment and accelerate healing processes in bone tissue engineering and dental applications. People suffering from bone fracture will be able to quickly recover using the smart material that is fabricated in-house,

Dr. Yanny takes pride in being part of women in science and hopes to empower more young women to pursue STEM-related careers. “The world needs science and science needs women” is a powerful rallying call that inspires her so she and others can help shape a better future.
