Something that is worth doing is often tough, but the rewards can be big.
Revolutionising Membrane Technology in Malaysia
Professor Datuk Ts Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail has made groundbreaking contributions to membrane technology.
As the first to produce indigenous commercially competitive hollow fibre membranes for gas separation, water, and wastewater treatment, his research delves into polymer rheology and spectroscopy techniques, resulting in high-performance membranes.

His work attracts global and national attention, securing support from private and government agencies. Professor Fauzi's innovations position Malaysia as a key centre for Membrane Technology research. Notably, his team developed the world's first high-pressure, high-CO2 concentration hollow fiber membrane pilot plant for CO2 removal from natural gas, showcasing local design and fabrication. The PETRONAS-UTM Membrane Technology Research Centre stands as a testament to his successful collaboration with PETRONAS.
An early love for science
Born in March 1966, Professor Fauzi's early fascination with science ignited a lasting curiosity. Thus, his academic journey began with a B.Eng in Petroleum Engineering and an MSc in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 1989 and 1992, respectively.
His pursuit of knowledge led him to a Ph.D. in Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, United Kingdom, which he completed in less than three years with his expertise in membrane manufacturing technology.

Returning to Malaysia, Professor Fauzi continued his academic career at UTM, where he currently serves as the Dean of Research for Materials and Manufacturing Research Alliance. This role allows him to play a pivotal role in fostering research and innovation in these critical areas.

Professor Fauzi's dedication to academic excellence and his commitment to fostering research and innovation have earned him widespread recognition and respect.  Through his research and mentorship, Professor Fauzi has inspired countless individuals to pursue careers in science and engineering, leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to shape the future of these fields.
The membrane technology breakthrough
Professor Fauzi’s interest in membrane research began while continuing his Master’s studies in UTM from 1991 to 1992.
He is the first Malaysian scientist who produced the indigenous commercially competitive hollow fibre membranes for their applications in gas separation as well as in water and wastewater treatment.

One of the most significant findings of his research is the fundamental study to understand the basic science of polymer rheology and the application of spectroscopy techniques to produce high performance membranes.

His studies provided valuable insights into the relationship between the properties of membrane materials and their performance in different applications. These findings have been instrumental in the development of high-performance membranes with improved efficiency and selectivity.
Recognising a remarkable journey
Professor Fauzi's exceptional contributions earned him numerous awards, including the Malaysia Young Scientist Award (2000), ASEAN Young Scientist Award (2001), National Intellectual Property Award (2009 & 2013), National Innovation Award (2009 & 2011), and the Malaysian Toray Science and Technology Foundation Award (2013).

Recognised as one of the Top Research Scientists in Malaysia (2012) by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, he also serves as the Editor of the Desalination Journal and co-founded the ASEAN Membrane Science and Technology Society.

His work, spanning various applications, has contributed to the sustainable development and utilisation of Malaysia's abundant natural resources.
