Categories

The biennial Merdeka Award will be conferred on individuals and organisations whose excellent work and achievements have made an outstanding impact on the nation and its people in the following categories:

The Merdeka Award recipient for this category will be recognised as the most worthy candidate who has made a significant, sustained, innovative and meaningful contribution or service of continued relevance in the field of education and/or community that benefits or improves the life of Malaysians or the Malaysian society.

The area of education shall also include educational research, education benefiting a marginalised group or the elevation of the education level for a targeted group of people.

The area of community shall not only mean service in the public interest in furtherance of community welfare but shall also be taken to include the arts (for example, the visual arts, the performing arts, the preservation of an art form) or sports (for example, work that has resulted in expanding the reach of sports to the public).

The Merdeka Award recipient for this category will be recognised as the most worthy candidate who has made a significant, sustained, meaningful contribution (whether in the field of research, management or practice) for the safeguard, protection, restoration, conservation or enhancement of resources and the environment. The meaning of contribution shall also be taken to include research, urban renewal and the application of new technology for the betterment of the environment. The achievement recognised should be for work done in the five-year period preceding the conferment of the award.

The Merdeka Award recipient for this category will be recognised as the most worthy candidate who has made a significant, meaningful and current contribution for the public good in the field of health, science or technology which shall include, amongst others, research, healthcare support or the discovery and innovative application of technology. The achievement recognised should be for work done in the five-year period preceding the conferment of the award.

An award will also be given to a candidate for Oustanding Scholastic Achievement recognising the most worthy Malaysian who has demonstrated excellence and merit. The candidate shall be a scholar conducting or playing a major role in academic research (whether pure, applied or emerging) resulting in significant discovery. The achievement recognised should be for work done in the five-year period preceding the conferment of the award.

A further award will also be given to a non-Malaysian person or organisation for Outstanding Contribution to the People of Malaysia recognising the most worthy candidate who has made an outstanding and substantial contribution to Malaysia or the people of Malaysia resulting in the significant improvement of the lives or the quality of life of Malaysians. The achievement recognised should be for work done in the five-year period preceding the conferment of the award.

One award will be given for each of the five categories above. In the event that in a given year, two individuals or organisations are deemed to be equally deserving of recognition, the award will be shared. Each award category comes with the Merdeka Award Trophy, a Certificate of Recognition and a cash award. Joint recipients equally share the cash award.

The Anugerah Harapan Merdeka aims to reward aspiring / up and coming / promising young individuals and organisations who are well on their way to becoming a Merdeka Award Laureate. It is open to recipients under 40 years old and below and organisations under 10 years of inception in the following categories:

Evaluation
Education & Community
  • Made an innovative and meaningful contribution or service of continued relevance in the field of education and/or community that benefits or improves the life of Malaysians or the Malaysian society and impact to sustainability.
  • Area of education include educational research, education benefiting a marginalised group or the elevation of the education level for a targeted group of people.
Environment
  • Made a significant, and meaningful contribution (whether in the field of research, management, or practice) for the safeguard, protection, restoration, conservation or enhancement of resources and the environment and impact to sustainability.
  • Achievement recognised must be for work done in five-year period preceding the conferment of the award unless deemed eligible by the Secretariat.
Health, Science and Technology
  • Made significant, meaningful and current contribution for the public good in health, science or technology field; research, healthcare support, discovery and innovative application of technology and impact to sustainability.
  • Achievement recognised must be for work done in five-year period preceding the conferment of the award unless deemed eligible by the Secretariat.
