Safeguarding our Future Generation through Empowering Young Parents in Reproductive and Social Health Education

Institution:
Family Planning Association of Hong Kong

Fostering Safety, One Conversation at a Time

Since the age of 22, Juliana Ooi has volunteered as a trainer in reproductive and social health, making it no surprise that she was named one of the winners of 120 under 40: The New Generation of Family Planning Leaders, a project organised by the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Inspired by her mentor, Dr. Mary Huang, who first introduced her to community health research work, Julianna aims to design an age- and culturally-appropriate social health kit.

The kit will assist young parents in initiating conversations with their young children as a strategy to protect them from child abuse and social problems such as sexual crimes, harassment, baby abandonment, and other related social ills with the aim to promote a more informed and safer society.

To pursue her research titled “Safeguarding our Future Generation through Empowering Young Parents in Reproductive and Social Health Education”, Julianna, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition & Community Health from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), will be attached to the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong.
