Improving Breast Cancer Detection at the Nanoscale

Associate Professor Dr. Lim Hong Ngee, holder of a PhD in Chemistry from Universiti Putra Malaysia, is now a senior lecturer at the Department of Chemistry within the Faculty of Science at the same university.

For her research entitled “Nanotechnology-based Blood Testing to Identify Breast Cancer Using Smartphone”, Dr Lim wanted to develop a smart nanotechnology-based breast cancer testing scheme using an autonomous analyser that would simplify the method of detection and provide fast diognosis of the disease.

Making big waves with nanotechnology

Dr. Lim, who is also the Head of Materials Synthesis and Characterisation Laboratory at the Institute for Advanced Materials (ITMA), specialises in synthesis, characterisation and applications of nanomaterials.

Her research aims to simplify the method of breast cancer detection, offering a rapid diagnosis through the development of a smart nanotechnology-based breast cancer testing system utilising an autonomous analyser.

“The research has realised the actual application of the on-site-lab strategy so that people can benefit from this technology. In addition, this also can provide an immediate solution in detecting and confirming breast cancer among women in rural areas,” she said.

From digital microfluidics to graphene magic

While attached to the University of Toronto, Canada, Dr Lim worked on developing an intelligent portable digital microfluidic system for on-the-spot disease diagnosis.

Now, with her husband and research team, she explores the use of graphene oxide as a foundation for synthesising nanocomposites with diverse applications, including supercapacitors, batteries, solar cells, sensors, water research, and as fillers for various matrices.
