KUALA LUMPUR: Seven distinguished Malaysians have been honoured with the prestigious 2024 Merdeka Award in commemoration of the 17th anniversary of the Merdeka Award Trust.

They include National Laureate Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Samad Mohamed Said, better known as A. Samad Said; theatre pioneer Datuk Dr Faridah Merican; and, renowned economist Professor Emeritus Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram

This year's award celebrates individuals in new fields, recognising laureates in the areas of performing arts and Malay literature, environment conservation advocacy, economy, education and initiatives to ensure equitable and quality healthcare and investigative journalism.

Samad, celebrated for his prolific work in Malay literature, shares the Education and Community category award with Faridah, who has been instrumental in shaping the nation's performing arts scene.

Former health director-general Tan Sri Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman was honoured in the Health, Science and Technology category for his dedication to improving Malaysia healthcare policies and services.

Meanwhile, geologist Professor Dr Joy Jacqueline Pereira was recognised in the Environment category for her extensive research and advocacy on climate change, while Jomo received the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement award for his contributions to economic development both locally and globally.

Meanwhile, Dr Kathryn Anne Rivai, who has dedicated her life to providing education to marginalised children in Sabah, was awarded for Outstanding Contribution to the People of Malaysia.

Finally, Ian Yee Ngan Fui, an investigative journalist, received the Anugerah Harapan Merdeka for his impactful work in investigative journalism and social justice.

All the awards were presented by Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizuddin Shah.

The Merdeka Award, established in 2007 by Petronas and Shell, honours individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to Malaysia.

This year's selection process involved evaluating over 400 candidates, ultimately celebrating those whose work has made a lasting impact on the nation.

Since its inception, the Merdeka Award has honoured 70 individuals and organisations, reflecting their indomitable spirit and commitment to Malaysia's progress.

Petronas president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, who is a member of the Merdeka Award Board of Trustee, praised the recipients for their "tireless efforts and extraordinary achievements" which have drawn global attention to critical issues.

He said the recipients' zeal and determination have aided in accelerating the country's progress in addressing challenges.

"These inspiring individuals personify the spirit of 'Merdeka' that continues to embolden generations of Malaysians in our pursuit of progress and excellence towards a sustainable future," he said.

Similarly, Shell Malaysia country chair and senior vice-president (upstream) Siti Hurrairah Sulaiman said, in building a compassionate, just and sustainable society, Malaysians must uphold striving for excellence values guided by a growing cadre of outstanding change-makers and trailblazers.
