That’s the question driving Professor Dr. Natrah Ikhsan, a microbial ecologist at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
She’s decoding how bacteria and algae interact in aquaculture, using quorum sensing and quenching to curb harmful microbes, improve water quality, and reduce chemical use for healthier, more sustainable fish farming.
Professor Dr. Natrah is pioneering antibiotic-free disease control in aquaculture using quorum quenching, disrupting bacterial communication to reduce infections in shrimp and fish hatcheries, and advancing more natural, sustainable farming practices.
Today, she actively contributes to global aquaculture research, showing how microscopic organisms can drive real progress in sustainable fish farming.
Professor Dr Natrah received the Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment in (2013) to Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, and University of Sydney, Australia.
