Dr. Zetty Norhana Balia Yusof, Associate Professor at Universiti Putra Malaysia, is creating fish vaccine using algae - specifically, microalgae which are incorporated into fish pellets.

Innovative, low-stress alternative to traditional methods, these algae also serve as nutrient-rich carriers, enabling more sustainable food systems to advance the local aquaculture industry.

Leading key projects at FBSB UPM’s Plant-Algae Biochemistry & Biotechnology lab, Dr. Zetty’s work integrates biochemistry, biotechnology, plant and marine sciences to improve fish health and disease resistance.

Dr. Zetty’s nature-inspired innovations are redefining aquatic protection across Malaysia and beyond. By minimizing manual fish handling and reducing antibiotic use, her approach promotes healthier ecosystems and advances both animal welfare and environmental sustainability.

Zetty received the Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment in (2017) to University of Cambridge, (UK).
