Don't Spoil Our Soils!

That’s the guiding belief behind Dr. Ng Chuck Chuan’s work.

With phytoremediation—a nature-based solution that uses plants to remove or stabilise heavy metals—he’s helping toxic soil recover, naturally and sustainably.

As it turns out, a single plant in the right place could be the start of cleaner, healthier soil.

Developing low-cost, sustainable soil-cleaning solutions for Malaysia, his research identifies plant species that thrive in contaminated environments while absorbing and stabilizing heavy metals, unlocking scalable remediation strategies for industrial zones, abandoned sites, and agricultural land.

Based in Xiamen University Malaysia, Dr. Ng has been working with academics, scientists, volunteers and local communities to unlock more effective and suitable approaches on phytoremediation to Malaysia’s environment.

Dr. Ng received the Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment in (2023) to Seoul National University (SNU), South Korea, National Taiwan University (NTU), Taiwan and University of Melbourne.
