In Sabah’s Kinabatangan floodplain, where more than 80% of the original forest has been lost, Amaziasizamoria Jumail is restoring lost rainforest through the Regrow Borneo project, studying how reforestation boosts carbon storage, biodiversity, and ecosystem health.
To measure real, lasting impact, Maz tracks key indicators like tree diversity, canopy growth, and above-ground biomass—the building blocks of a thriving forest.
Her goal was to create a replicable reforestation model that restores not just trees, but ecological balance and community well-being.
Now pursuing a PhD at Cardiff University, Maz collaborated with biodiversity experts in Mexico - also facing similar challenges.
Amaziasizamoria received the Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment in (2023) to Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos (UAEM) (Mexico).
