How can research move beyond discovery to create meaningful and lasting impact?
This question anchored the first Merdeka Award Talk Series: Campus Edition at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru, bringing together students, researchers and academics for a thoughtful exchange on translating ideas into solutions that serve society. The session featured Professor Datuk Ts. Ir. Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, 2014 Merdeka Award Recipient and 2023 Mustafa Prize Laureate; Syaza Soraya Sauli, 2023 Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment Recipient; and Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Noraini Idris, President and Founder of the National STEM Association, with the discussion moderated by Dr Abdullah bin Mohd Nawi. Drawing from their respective experiences, the panellists reflected on the importance of collaboration, innovation, resilience and purpose in navigating today’s evolving research landscape, reinforcing a central idea: the significance of research lies not only in discovery, but in its ability to improve lives, strengthen communities and shape a better future.
