About The Award

The Merdeka Award aims to promote thought leadership and innovation, foster a culture of excellence, encourage a world view, thereby enhancing Malaysia's standing as a dynamic, competitive 21st Century Global Player in all key sectors from science and technology to the arts.

As 31st August approaches each year, all Malaysians come together to celebrate 'Merdeka' with the nation's leaders, marking Malaysia's independence. But the essence of 'Merdeka' goes beyond colourful celebrations.

'Merdeka' is about honour, passion, determination and sacrifice. It reminds everyone to reflect on the admirable qualities as portrayed by our 'Pejuang Kemerdekaan' – role models with relentless human spirit.

And that very spirit lives on in the hearts and souls of Malaysians today. These are the outstanding individuals and organisations whose works and achievements have created a positive and significant impact on Malaysia and its people, the new generation of 'Pejuang Kemerdekaan.'

The Merdeka Award was established on 27th August 2007 to recognise and reward excellent individuals and organisations whose works and achievements have not only contributed to the nation's growth but have also inspired greatness in the people of Malaysia. It is a prestigious award that honours their outstanding effort and role in living the 'Merdeka' spirit.

The Royal Patron and Chairman of the Award is His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, the Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan.

From 2019 onwards, the Merdeka Award will be held bienially (alternating between the Merdeka Award and the Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment), to reach out to more Malaysians in our efforts to foster a culture of excellence and promote thought leadership and innovation in all key sectors.
